Random Events

Random Events are a fun and exciting site feature of Neopets. As you browse Neopets and Neopia, there's a small probability of a Random Event to occur. These events can be a simple random message, a useful tip when playing Neopets, receiving or losing items and Neopoints, receiving a PetPetPet, or a 10% Coupon to the Hidden Tower. These random events are indeed random, and can't be turned off or changed.

Guide Work in Progress!

This guide is currently a work in progress and we're updating it frequently as we learn more about random events, and tracking various events and rewarded items. If you notice an issue with our guide, received a reward or random event not listed, please contact us or send a Neomail to toe_bob. We greatly appreciate all help we receive! ♥

Avatars

When you receive a secret avatar, you'll be greeted with a familiar "Something Has Happened!" message. Although, according to TNT, the avatars being rewarded is a completely separate system from the random events you'll see throughout the site. Random events were redesigned in 2014, but rewarded avatars still have the same message format.

*throws multiple Rancid Old Meats* TNT! Ever since the Random Events were changed, I have won multiple times playing Treasure of the Black Pawkeet and I STILL don't have my favourite avatar in existence (Aisha Scallywag). Additionally, I've been scouring the boards and have noticed that no one has reported getting the avatar in the last month or so (at least, to my knowledge!) Please reassure me that the Random Event awarding the avatar is still working, because I'd really like to sleep at night. If not, I'll have my doctor forward my bill for sleeping medication to your head office. Thanks! ~thighguy678

Most avatars are given out using a completely separate system that just-so-happens to look like Random Events. (Shhhhh...) Aisha Scallywag would not have been affected by the update to Random Events, but we did look into it just in case and it's working normally. It's just really rare. We'll rub a Schnelly belly for good luck on your behalf!

Question #9,288, archived from Editorial Issue 640 · Published 2014-04-11

If you're unfamiliar, below is an example of the message you'll see when you receive an avatar:

Something Has Happened!
You are now eligible to use 'Christmas Aisha' as an avatar on the NeoBoards!

Games & Trophies

There are several random events that will steal a certain percentage of your Neopoints as a tax. Some of these random events will track the amount of Neopoints you lose, and will record it in the Monthly Hi-Score Table. The players who lost the most amount of Neopoints will be rewarded with a trophy. Since random events can only steal Neopoints you are carrying and NOT in your bank, you might need to carry a large sum of Neopoints. These trophies are a bit harder to obtain because they depend purely on chance to receive the random event.

If you assume a taxation loss of 25% and one of those trophies has a high score of 12,000,000 NP, you would want to carry at least
12,000,000 / 0.25 = 48,000,000 NP in order to achieve first place. This is also a similar calculation to for the minimum score to compete. You can also use our calculator below to determine how many Neopoints you must carry to compete for the trophy.

Side Accounts

As a reminder, you are not allowed to play games or use dailies that can give you items or Neopoints on your side account because this is cheating. However, Random events are an exception because you cannot control them. So, if you received an item or Neopoints on a side account, you can safely transfer it to your main account, or spend it to send your side account's pets to the NeoLodge. Although you may not sell these obtained items from your side account; you must transfer it to your main account in order to sell it.

The other day, I was logged onto my spare account and I got a random event telling me I had been given a book from a traveling book shop. I was wondering, is it against the rules to send this item to my main account? ~ kateiau

Nope. :) Anything won from a random event is yours to keep, and since you obviously can't have a shop on your alternate account, it's perfectly alright to send it to your main to sell it if you wish. (Or read it to a pet or whatever you wish.) This is quite different from doing dailies and getting freebies on alternate accounts, which isn't allowed.

Question #3,494, archived from Editorial Issue 220 · Published 2005-12-16

Hi TNT! Could you clarify the main and side accounts rules for us? Thanks! And please remove my username! ~ username removed

Sure! Please only earn Neopoints on one account. You can have up to 5 accounts to collect pets (please remember to feed them of course!) or to display collections in galleries. But we ask that you only do dailies, play games, have a shop, and earn Neopoints on your main account. If you do experience a random event or two on a side, that's totally fine! Hopefully it's a good one! And you can always transfer items among the accounts (for example, food, training supplies, and clothing) to take care of your pets.

Question #9,899, archived from Editorial Issue 700 · Published 2015-09-25

Hey. So I got a random event on my side account in which I got a piece of the Secret Laboratory Map. I sent it to my main account to sell and put it in my shop. Is that okay? Please keep me anonymous, thanks. :) ~ username removed

That is perfectly okay! You can't control random events (duh, they're random), so if one gives you items it's fine to keep them!

Question #10,050, archived from Editorial Issue 724 · Published 2016-03-18

I am a little confused on side accounts and NP. So everyone knows you can't earn NP on side accounts. What happens if we get a RE that gives us NP? Also, what about playing games just to get the avatar, and then transfer the NP to the main account? Is that allowed? Is it ok to keep NP on side accounts for the purpose of buying things for a gallery, as long as that NP was earned on the main account? *slides Asparagus Borovan Lasagne to hungry TNT* ~darkangeljls

Unfortunately, you cannot earn Neopoints on your side account even if only to transfer to your main account. Anything in the site that will earn you Neopoints is against the rules for a side account. Random Events don't count since you don't control those but anything you actively participate in that earns you NP is a strict no no.

Question #10,618, archived from Editorial Issue 819 · Published 2018-03-16

Hi TNT! Clarification—does all purchasing for side accounts have to take place on the main account, or can we transfer NPs to the side account and purchase items directly from there? I know all the NPs have to come from the main, but I don't know where those NPs are allowed to live! :) ~~i_love_latin

Hello!! Yes, all purchasing must be made from your main account and then sent to your side account. You can transfer points over to a side for the NeoLodge however any items must come from your main account. So it's best to keep all points on your main and then if you need points for the Lodge, you can send those over or use points you got from random events on the side account.

Birthday

During your birthday, you can expect an increased frequency in random events. We currently do not have sufficient data to determine how much this increases, but we'll update this guide when we have it.

Hi, TNT! *waves* I'm sure this is something that you thought you were done explaining, but unfortunately quite a few users (including myself) would like some clarification with regard to getting Random Events on your birthday. I've seen some users say that it was just an old joke on your behalf, but one gets an increased amount of RE's on their birthday, yes? Please remove my username. Thank you. :3 ~username removed

The fact that you get an increased chance for Random Events on your birthday is completely true. :) It's even been carried over to the new system. So, enjoy your special day!

Question #9,471, archived from Editorial Issue 653 · Published 2014-07-11

Probabilities

Over the course of a year and a half, we've collected thousands of random events and calculated their estimated probabilities. These probabilities can be seen in the table below.

We've noticed that there is a daily limit of 10 random events per user. In other words, you cannot receive more than 10 random events a day. This quota will reset at midnight NST, where you'll be able to receive up to 10 random events again. We also believe the system will not give you a random event if you've received a random event within the last 2 minutes. We also estimate a 0.1086 to 0.1854 % chance of receiving a random event for each loaded page.

Browsing shops, the Neoboards or playing Cheat may appear to frequently give you random events, because certain actions require reloading the page or viewing another page.

Premium Random Events

Based on our data, it appears the Premium random events system is different from the normal random events. We've only seen two different types of premium events, either the Space Faerie gives you a random amount of Neopoints or a random item. It appears the rewarded items are a random Neopoint item with a rarity of 75 and below. We're still collecting data, but you can view all known items rewarded from the Space Faerie, just in case it's actually a pre-selected item pool.

Since the premium random events are separate, they do not count towards your daily quota for non-premium events, as mentioned in the previous Probabilities section. Premium Random Events appear to have a slightly smaller probability, and might also have a maximum limit of 10 per day. We have not observed premium increasing the frequency of non-premium random events. However, since there are premium random events, this may give an appearance in more frequently occurring random events.

Hidden Tower Coupon

If you're lucky, you might get a random event that grants you a 10% Coupon to the Hidden Tower. When this event was originally released it had a typo, but it has always and still gives you a 10% discount. This coupon is only good for ONE item purchase, and does NOT expire or stack with other discounts.

I've gotten the Random Event that gives you 20% off at the Hidden Tower. However, when I went to peruse the selection, I noted that the discount it showed was only 10% off. I'm confused as to if it is, indeed, supposed to be 20% off or the 10% that is coded. ~silver_digital_wings

The Random Event had the wrong text. 10% is the correct number.

Question #9,302, archived from Editorial Issue 640 · Published 2014-04-11

Hello! I just got a Random Event that gave me a discount coupon for the Hidden Tower (I'm super excited!), but I was wondering if the coupon will last after today? There wasn't any time limit stated in the Random Event, but I don't want to lose it if it's a one-day-only thing. Thank you. :) ~hollister22_09

The coupon is good for one purchase and it doesn't expire. It's there until you use it!

And she thought the 3% discount days were crazy...

Question #9,303, archived from Editorial Issue 640 · Published 2014-04-11

I think the new Random Event that gives you 10% off at the Hidden Tower is awesome. =) I haven't received it yet, but I do have a question: let's say a "loyal user" were to receive the event and they happened to visit the Hidden Tower, perhaps on a certain Wednesday… would the items be priced at 10% off the normal price, or 10% off the already-reduced price? ~krazybabeh

The RE discount overrides the veteran perk, meaning it will be 10% off regular price. The discounts don't stack.

Question #9,320, archived from Editorial Issue 641 · Published 2014-04-18

Boochi & Colour Changing

There used to be several random events that could change your pet's colour, such as Boochi firing his ray gun to change your pet to be a baby. However in 2014, TNT altered the system to not randomly change pet colours. Although, Boochi is still around and will still fire his ray gun, it no longer has any effect and he will always "miss your pet". You can obtain Boochi as a challenger in the Battledome from one of these random events

Please help, TNT. I want to know if Boochi can now babify any of your 'pets, rather than just your active. I received a Random Event from Boochi this week and he fired at my lab rat rather than my active. He missed; I would have been upset if it had been any of my other 'pets. You see, I don't like Boochi since I almost quit playing Neopets because of him. I'd had my account for only three days when he babified my beautiful red Eyrie, zoezana. I didn't know what had just happened and I tried to get her back but couldn't. I grew to love zoezana and Neopets, but have never forgiven Boochi. *blushes and throws red roses and chocolates at all of the TNT staff* ~zanazoe

Boochi has changed a bit from his original form. We don't want to give anything away since part of the fun of Neopets is discovering new things, but please rest assured that you don't have to fear for any of your Neopets, even non-actives.

Question #9,290, archived from Editorial Issue 640 · Published 2014-04-11

I read on a board that there are no more color changing Random Events. Is this true? Will Boochi still be around changing 'pets into babies? I ask because I don't want to put my plushie as my active and have her Boochied or turning blue, etc. Please remove my username. ~username removed

The invisible / red / blue events are gone completely. Boochi is still around with some tweaks, as mentioned above. :)

Question #9,293, archived from Editorial Issue 640 · Published 2014-04-11

Boochi is no longer a threat, but Hubrid Nox is? I'm a bit annoyed that I need a Battledome 'pet guard, especially since I've been slowly training all of my 'pets. In the past week Hubrid Nox has hit me almost as many times as Boochi ever attempted. Is he really supposed to be so frequent? ~scatsmom

He was already pretty rare, but we've made him more rare to help balance out some really horrible luck. The new system actually made bad events more rare, but also increased the frequency of Random Events overall. We're, of course, still tweaking things as we go along.

Question #9,306, archived from Editorial Issue 641 · Published 2014-04-18

Hey, TNT! I recently got the Boochi Random Event, but didn't get him as a challenger in the Battledome like I thought we were supposed to. Is he a retired challenger now? ~drobit

No. We looked into it, and it should be fixed now if you want to go bop him on the nose.

Question #9,370, archived from Editorial Issue 645 · Published 2014-05-16

Hiya there, TNT. I have a quick question about the Random Event I got the other day. Boochi tried to zap my Xweetok baby (thankfully he missed) but my Xweetok was not my active Neopet! Is that not how it works anymore? Are my non-active 'pets no longer safe from these events? :( ~unfreeze_or_liron

Boochi failed to go to his annual eye exam and doesn't realise he needs glasses, which is why he always misses now.

Question #9,569, archived from Editorial Issue 660 · Published 2014-08-29

So I heard recently that the color-changing random events (such as Boochi) aren't happening. Is this temporary, or is it going to stay this way? I want to know if I'm safe to have my Faerie Cybunny as my active pet, or if I should keep my 'Boochi-shield' foster pet as my active, in case the events return without warning. Thanks! ~ dreamer_lily

Rest easy, your faerie Cybunny is perfectly safe! Color-changing random events are officially retired, and they will not be coming back without warning (they probably won't be coming back ever, but if they ever did, you'd definitely be warned!). You are now free to show off your favourite pet colour with pride!

Question #9,886, archived from Editorial Issue 699 · Published 2015-09-18

In the Neopian Times comic TNT Has A Sense Of Humor, there was info that colour changing random events had been removed. Is this true? ~ thedancing

Yes, colour changing random events have in fact been removed from the site! How could we ruin the beautiful paint job you saved up all those Neopoints for?

Question #9,911, archived from Editorial Issue 702 · Published 2015-10-09

Random Events Database

This is our database of known and tracked random events. Each random event has been categorized to some location and by some type, to make it easier to find specific events. You can sort the random events by the different fields, and defaults to showing higher probability first.

The probability is a normalized estimation, which is the proportion of how many times that specific random event was seen out of all events in our database, and might not be 100% accurate. It's also possible we might be missing some extremely rare events, feel free to contact us to get it listed! A random event with a higher probability means it's more likely to occur than events with a smaller probability.

Most random events appear to be a random message, such as the Ghost Lupe, or your pet annoying you to play a game. But there are many other random events that can reward you with an item or Neopoints, or steal from you! We have compiled a list of all tracked items rewarded from random events to determine their probabilities as well. If a random event gives out an item, you can click the View All Items below the message.

The Coincidence

The Coincidence was released in 2014 and has a random event machine. After completing a task you will receive a random event. You might be unlucky and receive a random message which has no effect. You might also be lucky and get an item, petpet, petpetpet, gain or lose pet stats, etc. Since the coincidence can only be played once and requires spending Neopoints to buy requested items, we don't have as much data to list all random events and their probabilities, but we will continue to update this list.
