The Neopian Times

What is the Neopian Times?
The Neopian Times (NT) is Neopets' version of a newspaper. A new issue comes out every other week for Neopians to come together and read. It is managed by The Neopets Team (TNT), but all articles, comics, and short stories are written by other Neopians. Neopians can earn avatars and prizes depending on what issue of the Neopian Times is being published that their articles is featured in. There are annual special issues that are specifically themed while some are regular publishings.

Sections

There are five sections to the Neopian Times to read through every other week. The sections include articles, editorials, comics, short stories, and series.

Articles

Articles are published pieces that can be extremely helpful in providing information for Neopians when playing on the site. Articles can either be informative or entertaining, depending on the writing style of the user. Articles can either be wordy with information or entertaining lists that give an insight.

Editorials

An editorial is a section of the NT where you are able to send in questions to TNT and someone from their team answers those questions. Unfortunately, not every question gets answered, however, the editorial does create a platform for Neopians to have a voice and a channel to connect with the TNT. In the past, Aesop would be the main editor to answer questions. Nowadays, we have the priviledge of also hearing from Miss Rainbow, Adler, Fae and more!

Comics

All comics are original works by the user and typically sets in the Neopets universe. Comics come in all genres such as serious, mysterious or comical, with all types of artistic skills.

Short Stories

Short stories are a creative outlet of users playing around with the Neopets universe within a variety of appropriate genres. Included are main characters, settings, and possible lore that are all found in Neopia.

Series

A series is a story that has different parts, with a new part being released every other week. They are much longer than short stories where each all the parts together.

Submitting to the Neopian Times

Submitting to the Neopian Times can be both challenging and rewarding at the same time. There are specific issues that reward better than other issues, making it a little more difficult to get your piece published. Here are some tips and tricks as to when to submit and what kinds of articles are often accepted and published.

Articles

Most of the articles that get published into the NT contain helpful information when playing on the site. Articles can either be informative or entertaining, depending on the writing style of the user and must be at least 1,000 words, and at most 50,000 words. Examples of different articles include, but are not limited to, are:
  • Game or Feature guides: share tips, tricks and detailed information about different games in the Games Room, or about other features the site offers such as Battledome, mobile games, or plots.
  • Persuasive Articles: this is a platform for users to be heard about any given issue found around the site. This can be plotholes, theories, complaints and more. In these types of articles, the user grabs onto an idea and persuades others to understand their side.
  • Listing Articles: similar to persuasive articles, this article is solely itemizing ideas together. Listing articles can include ranking various ideas together whether they are the best or worst.
  • Interviews: get some Neopian characters (Faeries, Dr. Sloth, Altador Cup players, etc.) together for an exclusive interview about events around Neopia.

Editorials

An editorial is a section of the NT where you are able to send in questions to TNT and someone from their team answers those questions. Unfortunately, not every question gets answered, however, the editorial does creates a platform for Neopians to have a voice and a channel to connect with the TNT. You can only submit three (3) questions per day, and if your question gets published into the editorial, it does not count as content for the avatar. There are different types of editorials that get published:
  • Happy Thoughts: being an all-around positive person can get into the "Happy Thoughts" section of the editorial which can be found on the bottom of the page. Positivity can range from giving compliments to TNT, wishing well the Neopets community and more!
  • Curious Questions: some Neopians want to find out more information about plots, events, or other features around the site. Sometimes TNT would answer the question fully, or leave a cliffhanger to those who want more information!
  • Informative Questions: as much as we don't like to admit, TNT has a lot they are doing around the site, and aren't perfect. Sometimes there are customisation items that need fixing. Neopians often use the editorial platform to share what items need editing.
In the past, Aesop would be the main editor to answer questions. Nowadays, we have the priviledge of also hearing from Miss Rainbow, Adler, Fae and more!

Comics

All comics are original works by the user and typically sets in the Neopets universe. Comics come in all genres such as serious, mysterious or comical. No user needs to have excellent art skills to turn in a comic of their own. There are requirements, however, that TNT look for: text on the comic should be easily read and that it relates to the Neopia community. Some technical requirements to note for those who want to submit a comic is that it needs to be submitted within one file with the maximum file size being 200KB, and the maximum image width is 470 pixels with accepted file formats such as GIF and JPG.

Short Stories

These are one-time stories that are between 1,200 to 4,000 words long. All stories are a creative outlet of users playing around with the Neopets universe. Included are main characters, settings, and possible lore that are all found in Neopia. All genres are found in short stories.

Series

A series is a story that has different parts, with a new part being released every other week. They are much longer than short stories where each all the parts together can be between 1,500 to 50,000 words. Some short stories can be turned into series, however, a series has all parts submitted at the same time.
